election was held, either because of vacation, sick leave or some other reason. Col. Duling also reiterated his earlier statement that the 42-hour week will in no way alter the bureau's plans to convert to a 40-hour week in January, as authorized by City Council. "Our planning for the pending 40-hour week has shown that we can go to 42 hours without a decrease in service or an increase in personnel," Duling said, "simply by allowing man to take off the one day in every 28 which was previously set aside as a training day, but more frequently used as a compensatory or vacation day." At least 44 more employes will be needed to cut back to a 40-hour week, however, if the city is to maintain its high level of police service without paying overtime in some cases. To accomplish this changeover with a minimum of difficulty, City Council authorized the 44 new positions last summer.
